Hisense 65-inch not loading(hanging) now repaired.

I got direct message on my FB account from a lady who wanted her television checked.

By the way we are not friends on FB but mutual friends and one of his friends complained about how is new television is misbehaving, I dropped a comment there and when this lady read my feedback she thought I can help in her case.

After contacting me we organized for the appointment for the site visit.

She provided her pin location and was able to reach her place effortlessly.

I was shown the television and I tried to reset (which the medical people call resuscitation) all in vain.

I went online and googled the model number then motherboard and I got the part was available at Aliexpress.com

I asked her if she was comfortable with board price and she agreed.

32 inch Skyworth LED television came in with symptoms” Logo comes on briefly” and then go into standby

I got this referral from my FB page, a client who was impressed by the work I share on my Facebook page about my repair work got interested and send a message that she has 32-inch television which need checking by a technician and suspected it was backlights.

From the symptoms she described even me I was convinced that the problem is on the backlight.

I booked her for appointment and send my location ping and the following day I got a phone call from the uber man that he is trying to reach my shop.

I went out and found the uber with a lady passenger at the back seat, with her was a 32-inch television.

The uber driver was released and we proceeded to the shop with the lady.

After reaching the shop the first thing to do is to confirm what the client said is correct and also make sure the screen is still intact.

The screen was okay and the symptoms were also confirmed to be exact.

I opened the television and after doing some board scanning I noted some three small capacitors on the output (actually led driver circuit which had their top silver lining slightly swollen.

Samsung 40-inch model LA40R51B, no display, backlight on and sound okay now repaired.

I did a facebook ad and got a client who wanted his television checked, I was given direction using google map since it was a new estate from where I have my repair shop.

After the appointment I started my journey to the site and after one hour I arrived at the ping address by google which was just a stone throw from the actual client home.

We linked up and went into her home and I was shown the television, first I had to apply the power to confirm the customer complaints which turned out to be true.

After some inquires I was told a technician came to check the television and took a small thing(circuit) which according to the customer I concluded it was the tcon board.

After one month the small thing was returned and re-installed back.
With that information I decided to open the television and headed straight to the tcon circuit and after seeing it, the customer confirmed it was the thing the technician had taken before.

Understanding tcon voltages

For those who have been doing LCD/LED repairs will agree with me that screen issues  are very common and are almost always caused by the small circuit usually located on the top of LCD panel as the major cause of these problems.

These issues are quite common and therefore a tech without adequate knowledge on how this circuit works will have it tough on his workbench.

Besides having it rough will also part with less profit since most of the television will be send back to the sender for lack of repair.

The most effective way of troubleshooting is voltage testing, in this  article I am going to look at critical t-con voltages and what happen if they fail.

43 inch Samsung plasma television (model PS43F4500) dead, red led blinking 3 times now repaired.

A client contacted me via my Facebook ad with an issue of faulty Samsung television.

Since the advert was broadcasted in the city of Nairobi, I expected him to be from within the city but it turned out he was from quite far place from where my workshop is.

I pointed to him my willingness to repair his television but distance does not favor us.

He promised to bring the machine up to my shop when coming to Nairobi and I left it at that.

JIEPAK 19 inch Led television dead now repaired

A customer brought in 19 inch Led television for check up, complaint was the television was not able to power up.

It was attempting then shut down in cycles, since it was using power adapter I tested the output from the adapter power supply and I got 12.44 vdc.
This looks okay according to the printed output on the adapter body.

So now I was ready to go the next level, opening the television and do further troubleshooting.

But before that I decided to swap the power adapter with the one I use in the shop for testing television in case the owner forgot to bring it along.

After powering the television I was surprised to see the TV has picked up and now working perfectly.
With this I concluded the problem was on the power adapter, but did I not get 12.44 Vdc?

Troubleshooting dead LCD-LED television

You are sitting in your shop and an LCD/LED television is brought in by the customer, where do you start?
First before the customer leave it is better to connect the television to the power source and confirm what he or she has said.

Also it is important to get a brief history of how the problem developed, this sometimes comes in handy when it comes to diagnosis but please don’t take any advice from the customer when they suggest what they think is the problem They are not professionals and therefore will always lead you to the wrong place.

After you connect the power source, apply the power via the power switch, and observe the power ON led at the front.

1.     Television is dead, Power led is ON.
If the power ON led is red, press the power ON button on the remote control or if you don’t have the remote press the front buttons one by one. One of them will kick start the set if all is well.

If the power ON led is present, this means the television standby voltage is present, the main board is also getting power, and keyboard/IR board is also getting power (3.3 v standby)
Tip
3.3Vdc is used to power the system control unit,
power ON led, and the IR receiver. This means whenever you see power ON led is on means the standby circuit is okay and the 3.3 Vdc regulator is okay and therefore don’t waste time trying to test them and therefore you should concentrate on other outlets
So even without opening the set you can be sure the standby voltage is okay.

If when you press the power ON button from the remote control and the power ON led does not turn blue means there is something blocking other power to start and therefore you can now open the television and continue with your troubleshooting.

Open the television slowly and carefully because LCD-LED television are fragile not like the CRT televisions especially the screen.

Turn it upside down and use a soft cloth under the screen to avoid scratches. After opening the many screws and removing the cover, do a quick scan of the board component wise looking for any suspicious component like I said before, component with bulged tops are considered bad, burnt marks on components and circuits' board are considered as stress and you should pay close attention to them.

Any suspect components should be subjected to further tests but with capacitors like I said once a capacitor top is swollen even slightly it is considered faulty.

This is because a bulged capacitor is usually short and if you check it with an ESR meter it will read very low ohms and as you know low ESR reading means the capacitor is okay and this will not be true since the meter will be seeing low because of the short and not the actual ESR reading.

With those remarks, it is time to pull your meter and do actual voltage testing, Voltage testing is one of the finest troubleshooting methods because sometimes you may find that the components are all okay but the track/PCB is broken and therefore blocking voltage from reaching other components, also this will help pick any open components quite easily.

Also voltage testing can help you narrow the problem to the affected block

To do voltage testing on the primary side of the S.M.P.S use the main capacitor as your ground (HOT) and for the secondary side of the power supply use the COLD ground (Television body is usually cold ground)

Please note the reason we started with the voltage testing is because we had power ON led lit otherwise if it was full dead symptoms, no signs of power whatever we could have started testing any safety components like fuses open on the board.

Once you clip your meter negative probe on the HOT ground which in our case is the main capacitor negative pin, now it is time to probe every point of interest on the primary side.

Sanyo LCD television model 24K40 dead power On LED Red

I received this 24 inch LCD television from a customer who wanted it to be checked.
Symptoms: Television is dead but the power on LED is on and RED in  color like the television is on standby mode.

I tried pressing all front keys and no change, then I decided to open the set for  further testing, once the television was open I scanned the power board with naked eyes looking for any suspicious components  and everything looked good.

VITRON LED TELEVISION MODEL HTC3228 AUDIO PRESENT BUT NO PICTURE NOW REPAIRED

I received this television from my neighbor and the complaint was sound is okay but no picture symptoms.

First I had to confirm if what the client is saying is correct and after switching on the television indeed the symptoms were confirmed right.
I took the set to my workshop and before embarking on opening the set I decided to use a bright light from the torch to see if there is something on the screen like dark picture which will guide me exactly which circuit to suspect even before opening the set.

Causes of vertical lines in LCD Television

Vertical lines in LCD television maybe as a result of several causes and here is am going to highlight a few which may be considered main causes.

1. Top on the list is the T-con board (timing control board) this is a small board usually under shield, used to converts the video signal into something the LCD panel can understand (synchronizing).

Causes of vertical in LCD Television

Vertical lines in LCD television maybe as a result of several causes and here is am going to highlight a few which may be considered main causes.

1. Top on the list is the T-con board (timing control board) this is a small board usually under shield, used to converts the video signal into something the LCD panel can understand (synchronizing).

So if the board has a problem may cause complete no picture or vertical lines on the screen.

2. Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS). Converts the 8-bit parallel RGB video information into a set of high speed serial lines for noise-free transmission to the T-CON board.

So if this cable is damaged the transfer of the signal from the processor to the LCD screen will be affected and therefore this may also cause vertical and horizontal lines on the screen.

3. LVDS connector. Sometime the tab connector to the LVDS cable may get loose and this also can cause vertical lines on the screen, that is why it is important to always check the cable is well connected.

If you get vertical lines on the screen or even the screen is blank could point to a loose connection at the tabs.

Understanding the standby circuit in LED-LCD television

When troubleshooting switch mode power supply (LCD/LED TV) it is very important to check the status of the standby voltage.

If you open the LED/LCD television and disconnect both the main board and the inverter board if they are separate, you will notice that only one outlet will have a voltage and the rest will be zero.

This voltage is usually 5Vdc and is called the standby voltage, if this 5 volts standby is not generated means the SMPS is defective and therefore you should not continue with any other test before you know what is blocking this voltage.
