Sony DVD player model DVP-NS628P with “No disc” symptoms now repaired.

I received this DVD player from a client who got my contact via our estate whatup group, I picked the machine from his house and headed to my shop which is around 3Km from where I live.

Upon reaching the shop I applied the power to the DVD and noted the machine was taking too long to load the disc and after some few minutes displayed No disc error.

I then opened the DVD player and went straight to the disc loader section, first let me point out that the customer has hinted to me that the machine was from another technician who was not able to solve the problem.

Usually items from other technician are difficult to repair and therefore I was very careful because a tech with limited knowledge in repair would do more harm to the equipment through guesswork.

So I begin my troubleshooting by doing visual inspection for any mis-handling and noted a small micro switch which detect the Disc was not locking and this may explain why the disc kept on rotating because the machine could not detect the first track.

Orion HT800HC Dead as a Dodo

Hello Humphrey!
Did you write the article on the Orion HT800HC? I have exactly the same problem with an Orion HT800HC and being a hobby mend it person, I opened the unit to have a look.

The Problem: We have a lot of lightning storms here in central Hungary and subsequent short power cuts (anything between 5 minutes and three days). I can well imagine that when the power came back on after a recent storm, there was a power surge which went into the DVD player which was still switched on. Consequently my unit is now dead as a dodo!

Samsung DVD player Model DVD-D530 hit by high voltage

A friend of mine called me to pass by his place to check on his DVD player which he suspected was hit by high voltage.

I passed by his place and the DVD was brought to me, I opened it and my first stop was the power supply since power surge usually affect the power supply especially the primary side.

The good thing with power surge problems are usually catastrophic and therefore in most cases you can easily identify the problem without using expensive test equipment and therefore your eyes are good enough to locate the faulty component(s).

DVD power supply dead now repaired.

Hello Humphrey! Your book on DVD player repair guide has made me to learn new hints how to solve problems related to DVD switch mode power supply (S.M.P.S).

Now I received a DVD from my friend which had power problem .When I opened the casing I noticed the fuse 2A/250V was dark inside. I removed it and connected a 100W bulb across the fuse and it was too bright and no voltage across the main capacitor 10uf/400v.

Sansui DVD player dead

Hi Humphrey.
I hope you well, I am busy repairing a Sansui DVD. I have scanned all the components looking for bad components, but there is no bad components.

I have checked the safety components of the primary circuit of this DVD everything is ok. I took my multitester meter checking for output voltage.

I found that the output voltage has dropped down. I tried to directly replace capacitors, but there is no improvement.

I have tried to locate the fault. I found that the output voltage has dropped from the secondary output diode. It uses ultra - superfast rectifier (SFF1004G).

I could not replace this rectifier, because it is not available in the electronics shop. The only rectifier I can get is SFF1005G. I actually wanted to know that, can I replace SFF1004G with SFF1005G.

This diode has tested ok, now I am not sure whether it fails under operation.

Your help will be appreciated.

MARSHAL DVD PLAYER OPEN / CLOSE drawers erratically now repaired

When I plugged the AC cord and push the button of this
DVD player showed On LCD of panel the following ON-OPEN and then CLOSE after this the machine close everything and get off
First I checked the PSU output voltages that were good
The 5 volt output read on my digital volt-meter 4.96 and 12 volt was10.98.
I found some cold solder joints in the power supply and re-soldered all of them.

Next I opened the disc tray and tested all the mechanical parts plus the three motors were all good.

From experience these kind of problems comes as a result of corrupting the Ware firm of this machine( flash EEPROM EN25F80)
This is a  8 Megabit Serial Flash Memory With 4Kbytes Uniform Sector

Fortunately this I.C was not SMD form and good manufacturer installed this I.C in Socket
This is another reason that this I.C must need re-programming once a while.
By the help of original program and I.C programmer I Reinstalled the FLASH EEPROM and the machine started working as new.

A question about my DVD player repair guide eBook.

Gerry…
Hello. Can you tell me if the DVD repair eBook methods can be applied to CD players?

My 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan automotive CD player does not play any CD's and does not eject CD's.

We also have a Sony AM/FM CD player. We had a power outage several months ago. Ever since then the CD player won't read any CD's.

Everything else works perfectly and I can hear the player trying to read the CD. Thanks.

Feedback and success report from Barbados islands

And for those who may not know Barbados you can learn more about it from  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbados . Briefly  Barbados  is a sovereign island country in the Lesser Antilles. It is 34 kilometers (21 mi) in length and up to 23 kilometers (14 mi) in width, covering an area of 431 square kilometers (166 sq mi). It is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic and 100 kilometers (62 mi) east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea;[5] therein, it is about 168 kilometers (104 mi) east of the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and 400 kilometers (250 mi) north-east of Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados is outside of the principal Atlantic hurricane belt.

Hi Humphrey,
My name is Winston, and I bought your book on DVD repair. It is fantastic because I have now started making successful repairs on them.

But I need you to tell me the range of resistance measurements for the sled motor and the tray motor; you mentioned twice that the spindle motor should measure between 5ohms and 20 ohms. Is this the same for other two motors, because the ones I have measured are 65 ohms 75 ohms etc, and they all spin with 9v battery attached, but I still am not sure if they are at fault or not.
Hi Winston,
Thank you for the feedback. For the sled motor and tray motor the resistance should be within the same range like the spindle motor.

Having said that the best tester for these motors is the analogue meter whereby if it’s okay it will spin also...this is good enough evidence that the motor is ok.

Sometimes 9 volts can be used to clear semi shorted motors but should not be used for long because it can damage the motor. Have you tried to use the analogue meter on these motors?
Kind regards Humphrey

Hi Humphrey,
Thanks for such speedy response.
I only own a Digital M/ meter at this time, but I will get an analogue one soon.

People here are very much attached to their DVD players, though a few will prefer to buy a new one when theirs go faulty, so I am learning to repair as many as I can for the monies I can get.

I'll call again if other questions arise.

Hi Winston.
Thanks Winston for your feedback. Continue making money but be sure also to invest on more test equipment to speed up your repairs.

All the best …regards Humphrey
