Understanding home theater Channels

Most people have problem in understanding home theater channels, in this article i am going to shed some light on the same.

Sometimes we see home theaters written 5.1, 7.1, 5.1.2 and so on.

What does this mean? 

This refers to channels; you may think of channels as speakers.

❖           Old stereo system is now referred to as 2.0(2 channels or 2 speakers)

❖           2.1 has 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer

❖           7.1 has 7 speakers and 1 subwoofer

❖           5.1.2 has 5 speakers,1 subwoofer and 2 dolby atmos speakers

Dolby Atmos speakers- where we place 2 or more speakers on the ceiling, now we are talking of 3D sound, where any sound can hover at any point in space.

Example: 7.2.1 has 3 speakers in front, 2 at the sides, 2 at the rear of the room and 2 in the ceiling and 1 subwoofer at the back (can be placed anywhere).
