New business setup after reading only basic electronics course

I received this email a few days ago from Mr. matt stolte from Massillon -United States of America.

Sir I have read your basic electronics book course and loved it. I have been doing flat screen TV repair for about 2 years and now have my own business doing it.
I knew nothing about electronic before I started. And can easily diagnose and troubleshoot a TV and get if fixed. Normally I just swap boards unless I see some blown caps.
However I am trying to get down to component level, there is 3 things I'm trying to learn.
1 how to trace circuits to see what component controls what
2 how to locate a short where it is on PSU or main
3 if power supply doesn't have the 5v standby how I can find the bad component what components are in charge of the standby voltage
Now I'm dealing with LCD, led, plasma only
Thanks in advance
Matt -USA

Videocon 21' TV is not turning on

Usually I get a lot of inquiries from my customers and non-customers with regards to CRT television repair, for me to give the best possible solution to the problem I usually need crucial information from the tech.to make any serious conclusion.

The most important information to analyze a technical problem is actual voltage testing figures, the beauty with figures is that they never lie.
This is the data/information I process in making any suggesting as to the circuit causing the problem in question.

This means the accuracy of my advice will actually depend on you (tech), in fact 90 percent is on your side because you are the person on the ground.
Let us look at this question from one of my customer from India Mr.Mahadev Pawase.

Buying ESR meter in Kenya

I usually get a lot of inquiries on where to buy ESR meter locally here in Kenya, personally I have done some research and most electronics shops attendant have no idea what it is.

Let’s hear this conversation between me and Paul Kabete from Kenya.

Paul: From my research including your recommendation I have come to see that an ESR meter is really handy for a good technician to save time and reduce guess work.

Sansui DVD player dead

Hi Humphrey.
I hope you well, I am busy repairing a Sansui DVD. I have scanned all the components looking for bad components, but there is no bad components.

I have checked the safety components of the primary circuit of this DVD everything is ok. I took my multitester meter checking for output voltage.

I found that the output voltage has dropped down. I tried to directly replace capacitors, but there is no improvement.

I have tried to locate the fault. I found that the output voltage has dropped from the secondary output diode. It uses ultra - superfast rectifier (SFF1004G).

I could not replace this rectifier, because it is not available in the electronics shop. The only rectifier I can get is SFF1005G. I actually wanted to know that, can I replace SFF1004G with SFF1005G.

This diode has tested ok, now I am not sure whether it fails under operation.

Your help will be appreciated.
